Lebanese Opposition to Putin: US-Israeli policies putting Lebanon on knife edge of "New Middle East"
|
The Lebanese National Opposition sent a memo to Russian President Vladimir Putin reminding of the war that ravaged Lebanon and of the suffering of the Lebanese people cause by the Israeli occupation. The opposition also warned against the dangers surrounding Lebanon and threatening its national unity, due to US and Israeli policies that are putting the country on the knife edge of the New Middle East project aimed at extending Washington's influence in the region.
The opposition memo also pointed to the internal sedition in Lebanon that is taking a sectarian form and requested President Putin stands firmly in the face of tyranny and playing with the fates of peoples. The memo also underlined that the current government under Saniora is illegitimate given that the core of the system in Lebanon is based on a reconciliatory democracy. The memo added, that the ministers who resigned represent a basic constituent of the Lebanese fabric, making Saniora an unconstitutional premier of the government.
The National Opposition memo also stressed all Lebanese groups want to know the truth behind the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri and are not opposed to forming a tribunal of international character to try those who committed the crime, however the opposition is concerned that this court would become similar to the European Inquisition intended to try the Lebanese for their national choices that are in harmony with the resistance of the Israeli occupation. The opposition praised in its memo Russia's positive efforts towards Lebanon and stressed the opposition's right to share in decision making according to the Lebanese Charter of Coexistence that is binding to all the Lebanese.
